History of English Language (2026)

About the Book:

The English language has a long and interesting history. It has changed continuously under the influence of different peoples, languages, cultures, political events, education, literature, science and technology. This book, History of English Language, is prepared for the UG students of Andhra Pradesh, in accordance with the prescribed syllabus. It presents the development of English from its early Indo-European and Germanic roots to its present position as a global language.

The book is divided into five units. The first unit introduces the origin of English, the Indo-European family, Old English, and the influence of Latin and Norse. The second unit discusses the Norman Conquest, its effect on English, the features of Middle English, and the contribution of Geoffrey Chaucer. The third unit deals with the Renaissance, the revival of learning, the printing press and William Caxton, and the influence of Shakespeare and the Bible. The fourth unit explains the Great Vowel Shift, word formation and semantic change. The fifth unit discusses the rise of dictionaries, Dr. Johnson's Dictionary, varieties of English, and English as a global language.

The main purpose of this book is to help students understand how and why English changed over time. The topics are explained in simple English with suitable examples so that students can understand important changes in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and meaning. Historical events and important personalities are also discussed to show their influence on the development of English. The book therefore follows the objectives of the course and helps students trace the journey of English from Old English to Modern English.

The content of the book is also designed to support the learning outcomes mentioned in the syllabus. After studying the book, students should be able to explain the origin and growth of English, understand major linguistic changes, identify important events and personalities, and discuss the effects of printing, colonisation and globalisation on English. The final unit also encourages students to understand the different varieties of English and to think about both the advantages and disadvantages of English as a global language.

I hope this book will be useful to students in their classroom learning, examination preparation and further study of English language and literature. I have tried to present the subject in a clear, systematic and student-friendly manner.
